English Words You Already Know in Hebrew: Part B – The Suffix Connection


Hello Hebrew learners! Ready to level up your Hebrew skills using your English vocabulary?
In Part 1, we unveiled 50 English words hiding in plain sight in Hebrew. Now, we’re diving into the magical world of suffixes. But that I mean English formats that are changing a bit in Hebrew, but you can still understand.

TION becomes: ציה

English words ending in -tion? In Hebrew, they’re having a party with -ציה (-tzia)!


Examples:

  • ריאקציה (Reaction)
  • אינפלציה (Inflation)
  • רגולציה (Regulation)
  • פרובוקציה (Provocation)
  • רזולוציה (Resolution)
    אינפורמציה (Information)
    מוטיבציה (Motivation)


Y becomes: יה

When English words end with -y, Hebrew says turns it into -יה (-ia).


Examples:

  • היסטוריה (History)
  • גיאוגרפיה (Geography)
  • פילוסופיה (Philosophy)
  • ביולוגיה (Biology)
    פסיכולוגיה (Psychology)


IVE becomes יבי

Examples:

  • אובייקטיבי (Objective)
  • אלטרנטיבי (Alternative)
  • אגרסיבי (Aggressive)
  • מסיבי (Massive)
  • מסיבי (Massive)
    אינטואיטיבי (Intuitive)
    אקטיבי (Active)

IC / ICAL becomes י

English words ending in -ic get a minimalist makeover in Hebrew, becoming simply -י (-i).


Examples:

  • תיאורטי (Theoretical)
  • אנליטי (Analytical)
  • טרגי (Tragic)
  • לוגיסטי (Logistic)
  • דרמטי (Dramatic)
    אוטומטי (Automatic)


AL becomes לי

When English words end in -al, Hebrew gives them a friendly -לי (-li).

Examples:

  • טוטאלי (Total)
  • ברוטאלי (Brutal)
  • ויראלי (Viral)
  • אינטלקטואלי (Intellectual)
    נורמלי (Normal)
    גלובלי (Global)


IST becomes יסט or סטי

Words ending in -ist? Hebrew sometimes uses -יסט (-ist), sometimes -סטי (-sti).


Examples:

  • פיינליסט (Finalist)
    מינימליסטי (Minimalist)
    סוציאליסט (Socialist)
    קפיטליסט (Capitalist)
    אופטימיסט (Optimist)


ISM becomes יזם

Last but not least, -ism becomes -יזם (-izm) in Hebrew.

Examples:

  • מינימליזם (Minimalism)
    סוציאליזם (Socialism)
    פרפקציוניזם (Perfectionism)
    קפיטליזם (Capitalism)
    פמיניזם (Feminism)
