How to use Chat GPT to learn Hebrew

Or any other language, for that matter…

The video shows the whole experiment I had with chat GPT, in Hebrew. For English, read the article below:

So, if you are looking for creative and fun ways to improve your Herbew, to make sure you remember new vocabulary, or just to have a very friendly and supportive pen-pal – consider using Chat GPT.

I had a little test with it, with 5 different ideas of what to ask so you get the best results for you.
I must admit – its Hebrew is not perfect yet, and even though I was using the paid version of it (chat gpt 4) still it had some mistakes in Hebrew (and it told me that I was wrong!!! messing with a Hebrew teacher…).
Nevertheless, it was really fun and I think overall productive, so without further ado, here are 5 ways you can use Chat GPT to help you with your Hebrew:

1. Ask it to test you with quiz questions

As you can see, what I wrote was: “Hi chat, I study hebrew and would like you to help me test my hebrew. could you create an interactive quiz for me, that its topic is “going to the market”?
I didn’t mention what level I was, so it created kind of a general test.

As it was lower than my level, I asked him: “can you create a harder level quiz, that I translate the whole sentence?” and of course he (at this point he is not “it” as we became closer…) said: “Absolutely! Here’s a more challenging quiz where you’ll translate entire sentences related to a market scene from English to Hebrew.

Remember that as you give Chat GPT more information, it (or he, or she…) will create something that fits you better. So that’s how my next quiz looked like:

You can play with it, choosing different topics and levels, and fitting it for your level and needs.

2. Review a specific vocabulary together

So the next thing I asked was: “could you create a quiz for me with various types of questions, using these new words I just learned” and then I added a list of 6 “new words” that were actually a part of a class of one of my students.
And he replied:

After I answered, it gave me feedback. I actually got only 50% of the questions right, and not because I don’t know Hebrew, but because it had mistakes. So… I wouldn’t count on its feedback 100%, but it is a great way to review the vocabulary!

3. Free conversation in Hebrew

The next thing I asked was: “Now I want us to have a conversation in Hebrew, ask me questions and I answer in Hebrew. If I’m incorrect, please correct me 😊”This part was actually my favorite. He asked nice questions and it was all in Hebrew, and I started feeling like I could keep texting with him forever like this (no wonder some people are falling in love with robots…).

Remember to let him lead the conversation, and if you have a specific topic that you want to talk about, or if you want to adjust the level of the conversation, you can always ask. Chat GPT is a very good listener… (and here is this little crush again…).

4. A translation exercise

My next request was: “Can you give me a translation exercise, intermediate level, about “israel vs America”Of course, he was very nice and immediately gave me sentences to translate.

Here I ended this session, but as I said, the options are infinite, and you can be as creative or demanding as you like. You can choose the vocabulary or direction, or let it choose.Let me know if you tried it, or if you have more ideas on how to use Chat GPT to improve your Hebrew.

Good luck and enjoy!
