Learning Hebrew with Apps: What My Students Really Use 📱

As a Hebrew teacher, I’m not only teaching – I’m constantly learning from my students. They often share great tools and resources that help them expand their Hebrew in fun and effective ways. One student in particular recommended several apps and even walked me through how he uses them – so I could pass the knowledge on to others.

At his request, I decided to put together this list of apps that can boost your Hebrew learning and give you a more dynamic, playful experience.

1. Duolingo

Download for iOS | Download for Android

Probably the most well-known app in the language-learning world. Duolingo offers a Hebrew course that’s playful and addictive, especially great for beginners and early intermediate learners. It’s not perfect for grammar or speaking practice, but it’s excellent for daily exposure and building vocabulary habits.

2. Mondly

Download for iOS | Download for Android

If you prefer a bit more structure, Mondly might be your style. It gives you daily lessons, voice recognition for speaking practice, and short dialogues. It’s designed for busy people who want a little Hebrew practice each day, and it works well on the go.

3. Nemo Hebrew

Download for iOS | Download for Android

This one is all about practical words and phrases. Think “Where’s the bathroom?” and “How much does it cost?” It focuses on pronunciation, which makes it a great companion for travelers or complete beginners who want to sound more natural.

4. Gus on the Go (Hebrew)

Download for iOS | Download for Android

An animated, game-based app designed for kids, but many adult learners find it useful too! It’s especially good for beginners. You can learn basic themes here, like the names of colors and animals in Hebrew. Since it’s designed for kids, it uses a lot of storytelling, which is a very effective way of learning. Highly recommended!

Please note that this app is not free.

5. Unuhi

Download for iOS | Download for Android

If you enjoy reading, this app offers bilingual children’s books in Hebrew and English. You can read the same sentence in both languages side by side – perfect for building reading skills gently. Great for beginners or anyone who wants simple, clear Hebrew in context.

6. כתב: לימוד כתיבת אותיות עבריות

Download for Android

I saw another Hebrew teacher recommending this app for students who can’t write in Hebrew script and would like to learn and practice it. It’s focused specifically on handwriting practice.

Note: This app is primarily available for Android.

🎧 Bonus: Hebrew Podcasts on Spotify

Spotify is well known as an endless source of music, but it also has a huge podcast library. If you search “learn Hebrew” on Spotify, you’ll find some very good and useful podcasts, including “Streetwise Hebrew” (the most popular one), and even my own podcast: “Hebrew Unplugged” 🙂

I wrote a different post that included more information about Hebrew learning podcasts.

💬 Final Thoughts

Apps and podcasts are like your “daily vitamin” for Hebrew – easy to take, and helpful for exposure and review. But like any supplement, they work best when combined with real interaction.

When students ask me, “Can I learn a language just by using Duolingo?” – I usually say: it’s a great tool for expanding your vocabulary, but not ideal for improving your speaking skills. That’s why I recommend using these tools to support your learning, not as your main method.

(Well… I am a teacher, and I happen to believe that a real teacher makes a real difference 🙂)

Have you tried any of these apps? I’d love to hear which ones worked best for you!
